Thornton Tomasetti aspires to be one of the most sustainable firms in the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) world, in the way the firm designs projects and in how it operates as a responsible business leading by example.
The firm has made a commitment to achieve carbon neutral business operations and to contribute as an integral team member to the vision of carbon neutral buildings by 2030.
In order to make progress towards the goal of 2030 carbon neutral business operations, Thornton Tomasetti’s staff is working to reduce energy consumption and waste from its offices as well as to provide incentives to reduce emissions from employee commuting.
In 2014, Thornton Tomasetti implemented a program to offset CO2 emissions from all business air travel through donations to Carbonfund.org in support of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. This is an important step in achieving truly carbon neutral operations, after all efforts to reduce and conserve energy usage, and alternative transportation and client communications options, are exhausted.
In addition to looking inward, Thornton Tomasetti is involved in external efforts to realize carbon neutrality throughout the building sector. It was the first primarily structural engineering firm to join the AIA 2030 Commitment, which helps firms to realize the Architecture 2030 vision of carbon neutral buildings by the year 2030. Thornton Tomasetti recognizes that its best opportunity to realize the Architecture 2030 vision is to be found in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions related to structural materials like steel and concrete, and to this end the firm has been calculating the embodied carbon in its structural projects for the past four years and contributes to research informing the field. Thornton Tomasetti is a sponsor of the Carbon Leadership Forum and a partner in the development of the Building & Real Estate Sector Climate Declaration, which invites companies in the sector to advocate for climate action.
Thornton Tomasetti sustainability specialists collaborate with clients to integrate successful green solutions into the planning, design, construction and operation of buildings in order to reduce the environmental impact of buildings at every stage of their life cycle. With two LEED Fellows on staff, the firm continues to expand the boundaries of sustainable design. The firm’s sustainability experts are passionate about working with building owners, managers, designers, builders and occupants to create efficient, high-performance climate responsive buildings and communities.
Education is critical to improving sustainability in the built environment. Thornton Tomasetti facilitates detailed charrettes for clients, community stakeholders and design teams, offers custom courses for designers, contractors and owners, and serves as a USGBC Education Partner.
