Savvy Rest, an organic mattress, bedding and furniture company based in Charlottesville, VA, reached its tenth year as a Carbonfree® Business Partner with Carbonfund.org this year. Over those ten years, Savvy Rest has made annual donations to Carbonfund.org in order to neutralize an aggregate total of 820,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions through support to Carbonfund.org’s high quality energy efficiency, forestry and renewable energy carbon offset projects.
“Now, more than ever, people around the world are reevaluating their priorities and are reflecting on what it means to be a member of our global community. The things we’ve taken for granted have come into sharper focus and the collective power of humanity shines through,” says Savvy Rest CEO John Howard-Smith. “We have always viewed it as part of our responsibility to take care of the communities we belong to, our customers, our employees, and our environment. And, as we witness the fragility that surrounds us, it’s imperative that not lose sight of preserving the things we value most. We’re proud to be a Carbonfree® Business Partner for the past 10 years and look forward to being part of this global effort for years to come.”
Savvy Rest also is an employee-owned ESOP company and a Certified B Corp. The company’s business values focus on health and environmental factors when designing product offerings, thinking beyond profit to how the company can positively impact the lives of customers through products and services.
Savvy Rest ships mattresses all across the US and even internationally. For local Virginia customers, Savvy Rest will recycle old mattresses and bed foundations free of charge when delivering new mattresses, through a partnership with Nine Lives Mattress Recycling in South Carolina, which keeps mattresses and foundations out of landfills. Savvy Rest production facilities have all been inspected and certified to the rigorous Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
Savvy Rest also has achieved GREENGUARD GOLD Certification for organic mattresses, pillows, and mattress toppers. GREENGUARD-Certified products must meet stringent standards for low chemical emissions into indoor air. GOLD-level certification includes additional requirements for vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly.
The Dunlop latex that Savvy Rest uses is GOLS certified (Global Organic Latex Standard). The natural Talalay latex has been certified as Cradle to Cradle GOLD, a measure of its health impact, level of material re-use, water stewardship, use of renewable energy, and social fairness. The latex is also sourced from rubber tree plantations that adhere to sustainable forestry practices. Furniture available through Savvy Rest is made with sustainably-harvested and regionally-sourced maple and poplar wood certified by Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc.
