The Seneca Meadows Landfill Project collects and destroys landfill gas, which is comprised of methane, and the Project also delivers some of the landfill gas for utilization in a gas-to-energy plant.
In addition to mitigating climate change, the Project has also received numerous awards for its environmental stewardship and community engagement. For example, “In 2009, SMI {Seneca Meadows} opened its Environmental Education Center, a 3200 square foot LEED Gold Certified structure, where it conducts various environmental related courses and labs for the area schools and community. SMI contracts with the Audubon Society for staffing requirements at the Center. SMI has received numerous awards including ‘Seneca County Business of the Year’ and has received the Rochester Business Journal Environmental Leadership Award in 2009 in the Alternative Energy category. SMI has also received a U.S. Congressional Proclamation for its involvement in the local area and its commitment to preserve and protect the environment.”
The Project is expected to mitigate the release of more than 2.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions to the atmosphere over the project lifetime.
