Leslie and I were lucky and fortunate enough to be selected as the winner of Carbonfund.org’s “Holidays Eco Tour Vacation Sweepstakes”, an all-expenses paid trip to Peru. The trip included airfare to and within Peru, two nights in Lima and a 5 day, 4 night luxury river cruise in the Amazon. We were notified by Linda that we were the winners in January. After several days of being in denial, we contacted Linda who assured us the contest was real and we were the winners. It was a great belated Christmas present.
Who knew that winning a trip would be so easy? First, donate money to a great charity to plant trees around the world, then receive notification from Linda at Carbonfund.org that you won, fill out a few pieces of paper, plan your trip with Justin from The Evolved Traveler and finally enjoy a once in lifetime awesome vacation.
Here is a quick summary of our unbelievable trip:
Day 1 – Fly to Lima
Day 2 – Sleep in. Take a city tour of Lima which included a fabulous lunch, a visit to the Larco Herrera Museum to learn about Peru’s pre-Inca civilization and view pre-Columbian art, a short drive to the Historical Center of Lima to visit the numerous tourist attractions.
Day 4-6 – We boarded a skiff in the morning and in the afternoon each day to witness the wonders of the Pacaya Samiria Reserve. On our skiff excursions, we saw the beautiful Amazon Basin and numerous wildlife including parrots, macaws, wood storks, three-toed sloths, several monkey species, river dolphins, and caimans. We were also fortunate enough to learn about the Amazonian culture by visiting a couple of local villages. On board, we ate amazing Peruvian food, attended several educational and entertaining seminars, drank several Pisco Sours and even find time a get a massage.
Justin and his team at The Evolved Traveler not only helped us plan and coordinate our trip to the Amazon, they also worked with us to plan a fabulous one week extension to Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. On this extension, we were able to visit the wonders of the Incan empire, the amazing Andean landscape, learn more about the Peruvian culture, enjoy the fabulous local cuisine, drink more Pisco Sours and we had time to visit the Picaflor House. The Picaflor House provides a stimulating and dynamic after school program to the children of Oropesa and several small villages in the surrounding rural area.
Leslie and I want to thank Carbonfund.org and The Evolved Traveler for making our dreams come true with such an unbelievable vacation.
