It takes continuous effort to manage and reduce carbon emissions associated with running a business.  Long-term Carbonfree® Business Partner Mountain Rose Herbs takes this commitment to operational sustainability very seriously and has made great progress to “reduce what you can, offset what you can’t™” year over year.

Mountain Rose Herbs offers high quality organic bulk herbs, gourmet spices, loose leaf teas, essential oils, herbal extracts, and natural body care ingredients, including certified organic, fair trade, ethically wild harvested, and Kosher certified botanical products, through its online store.  The company’s primary facility was constructed with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards and relies heavily on natural lighting. Energy demand was further reduced by making a complete lighting upgrade to energy-efficient bulbs in principal facilities and installing Energy-Star rated heating and cooling systems.

In addition, Mountain Rose Herbs upgraded all computers to those with Gold Star ratings for energy conservation, minimal shipment packaging, and elimination of environmentally harmful materials, as well as more energy-efficient flat screen monitors. The company converted all electrical usage to a local Green Power program to ensure that a significant portion of electricity comes from wind and solar sources.

Even with all of these efforts, management at Mountain Rose Herbs recognizes that the company still produces carbon emissions. Since 2008, they’ve worked with Carbonfund.org to measure and offset these unavoidable emissions by supporting clean energy and carbon reduction projects such as a wind farm in India, a methane collection plant in New York, and Carbonfund.org’s forest conservation work in Brazil.  To date, the company has neutralized over 4 million pounds of carbon emissions, equivalent to taking 400 passenger cars off the road for a year!

Carbonfund.org applauds Mountain Rose Herbs for its long-term and continuous commitment to sustainability and is honored to partner with the company to help achieve its goals.

It all started with a ball of yarn.  It inspired the founders of Jones & Vandermeer to undertake a year-long adventure to find beautiful, rare, and sustainably created yarns and fabrics, then make those products available to their customers.  They carry organic fabrics and have recently launched their own line of organic and fair trade cotton alpaca yarn infused with copper.

Jones and Vandermeer, the owners’ dogs, taught them that world is a beautiful place on which to tread lightly and try to leave it better than we found it. By sourcing products from around the globe and getting it to customers as quickly and conveniently as possible, packages must board trucks or planes in the process.

To reduce their carbon footprint, Jones & Vandermeer joined the Carbonfree® Business Partnership program and has renewed that commitment for the past five years.  In that time, Jones & Vandermeer has neutralized 395,000 pounds of greenhouse gases, the same quantity as released by combusting over 20,000 gallons of gasoline.

Jones & Vandermeer prints certain product tags and paper materials through a certified green printer, using 100% recycled paper and environmentally friendly soy-based inks. Products are wrapped in either 100% recycled tissue paper or reusable cotton bags, where possible. Jones & Vandermeer understands how to follow the thread of sustainability throughout its operations, and Carbonfund.org is proud to partner with them in these efforts.

The New Year is here, and progressive businesses are already launching their sustainability initiatives.  New Carbonfree® Business Partner evolveEA is out of the blocks early with their Green Vision for Living Buildings in 2014.

evolveEA is a multidisciplinary architectural design practice committed to sustainability in the built environment, and ready to help individuals, communities, and organizations take strategic action towards sustainable practices.  evolveEA looks through three lenses of sustainability: People, Process, and Place.

evolveEA is a carbon neutral, B-Corp certified company and won first place among small businesses in Southwest Pennsylvania in a 2012 competition judged on all aspects of a company’s sustainability footprint.  After reducing emissions wherever possible, evolveEA chose to partner with Carbonfund.org to completely neutralize emissions from four years’ worth of annual business operations.  Through the Carbonfree® Business Partnership program, evolveEA is supporting energy efficiency projects in order to mitigate its own operational emissions.

“evolve’s mission to advance sustainable systems and solutions for people, processes, and places has driven us to achieve and maintain carbon neutral operations since 2011,” explains Steve Hockley, Sustainability Process Manager.  “While we have taken many steps to reduce our carbon footprint, Carbonfund.org has enabled us to reach net zero emissions by purchasing offsets for four years worth of greenhouse gas emissions from our office operations and travel.”

The impact of building sustainability can be seen in recent evolveEA projects, including the US Steel Tower’s LEED certification process begun in 2007.  With the recent changes to LEED certification, businesses have additional opportunities and incentives to neutralize building emissions by supporting carbon emissions offsetting projects.  evolveEA and Carbonfund.org look forward to partnering on future projects to help advance sustainable systems and solutions across the country through the design of green buildings and facilitation of carbon-neutral operations.

Environmentally-responsible business entrepreneurs come by their inspiration through a variety of experiences.  For Michelle Garcia, Founder and President of Pure&True, a natural and organic beauty and skin care products company based in Oahu, the inspiration began with researching the requirements for LEED building certification.  Through the process, Michelle learned of the many toxic ingredients contained in home and personal care products.  Her continued research led her to develop Pure&True as a cosmetic company devoted to pure, natural and organic product ingredients and with a strong commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

As a company, Pure&True cares about the choices the business makes and how those choices impact customers’ health and the environment.  They believe it is possible to indulge oneself with skin and beauty care products while making a meaningful difference in the world.  Six years ago, Pure&True made the decision to offset the carbon emissions from its business operations and product shipments by joining the CarbonFree® Business Partnership program and supporting our global reforestation and sustainable energy projects.  As a CarbonFree® Partner, Pure&True has neutralized over 430,000 pounds of carbon emissions, equivalent to the quantity of carbon dioxide sequestered by over 5000 tree seedlings grown for ten years.

“As a cosmetic company, I believe that Pure&True should be a vehicle to making a difference in the world – through the products it creates and the support it lends to environmental and social charities,” explains Michelle.  “This is the vision that sparked the birth of Pure&True, and I look forward to developing this vision as the company grows.”

In addition to maintaining its CarbonFree® operations, Pure&True also donates 5% of the profits from each product sale to selected social and environmental charities.  Pure&True makes it possible for their customers to support their products while making positive contributions to protecting and preserving the environment, and improving lives of women and families around the world.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the transportation industry continues to contribute approximately 28% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the US.  Yet, transportation services are a necessary part of commerce, recreation and daily life for most.  While fuel efficiency standards and gas conservation driving techniques help, emissions from the transportation sector likely will be impossible to eliminate.

Leaders in transportation services recognize the importance of maintaining environmentally responsible programs to reduce operational emissions.  Carbonfund.org’s business partner Event Transportation Associates (ETA) exemplifies this leadership, reaching its fifth year as a CarbonFree® Business Partner.

ETA is a national transportation management company specializing in hotel shuttles, meet-and-greet services and VIP moves. ETA has designed and operated transportation systems for some of the largest international sporting, convention, and political events in the world.  Their clients have included the World Olympics, National Hockey League and National Basketball Association All Star Games, Harley-Davidson, the Consumer Electronics Design and Installation Association, and various other corporate and association groups.

“ETA is committed to reducing our carbon footprint with the assistance of Carbonfund.org. As a small business in the transportation industry, we are proud of our partnership with Carbonfund.org and the opportunities they offer,” states Kelly Clark, Vice President of ETA.  “Carbonfund.org's statement of reducing what you can and offsetting what you can't fits our corporate mission of being a responsible partner to the environment.  As a leader in the transportation management industry, we feel it is our responsibility to limit our mark on the environment through positive programs such as Carbonfund.org. We are excited to work with Carbonfund.org on reducing the footprint of the transportation services we provide."

By supporting Carbonfund.org’s clean air technology and carbon reduction projects over the past five years as a CarbonFree® Business Partner, ETA has neutralized almost 450,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.  That’s equivalent to the emissions created by burning over 22,600 gallons of gasoline.  This continuous commitment to environmental responsibility confirms ETA’s position as a clear leader in sustainable national transportation management services.

As part of its overall mission, Federal Career Experts believes in protecting the planet by making choices that enhance the quality of the atmosphere and the resulting quality of life.   In order to help achieve this goal, Federal Career Experts became CarbonFree® in 2007, offsetting their carbon footprint by supporting Carbonfund.org’s renewable energy projects.  FCE remains one of Carbonfund.org’s most tenured CarbonFree® Business Partners.

“The nature of Federal Career Experts’ business requires that we travel a great deal”, said John Grobe, President. “Though we are conscientious about our energy usage, we still have a relatively large ‘carbon footprint’ and have chosen to take steps to offset our impact on global warming.”

To date, Federal Career Experts has neutralized carbon emissions equal to the emissions created by combusting over 18,000 gallons of gasoline.  This continuous focus on serving federal employees while maintaining a sustainable business practice sets FCE apart in its field.  Carbonfund.org is proud to partner with Federal Career Experts in this long-term commitment to operational excellence.
