The following is a guest blog post by Brilliant Earth

Founded in 2005, Brilliant Earth is the global leader in ethically sourced fine jewelry. Our mission is to make jewelry as beautiful as it can be. We are passionate about cultivating a more transparent, sustainable, and compassionate jewelry industry.

We are proud to be a Certified Carbonfree® Business Partner. As part of our continuing journey to implement sustainable practices, we will continue identifying ways to reduce our footprint and offsetting emissions that we cannot eliminate. The first step toward becoming carbon neutra

l was calculating our carbon footprint. To calculate our footprint, we assessed the direct emissions associated with our annual operations including energy use, packaging, shipping, employee travel and employee commuting. We used publicly available tools to complete the calculation including the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator and’s carbon footprint calculator.

After calculating our carbon footprint, we partnered with to offset our carbon emissions by contributing to Tropical Rainforest Conservation in Brazil.

The Tropical Rainforest Conservation project focuses on protecting 750,000 acres of tropical rainforest in Brazil, helping to reduce global carbon emissions, conserve the habitat for many threatened and endangered species of plants and animals, and improve the local water quality. We plan to continue our journey and identify ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint in the future.

As part of our commitment to environmental responsibility, our fine jewelry is crafted from primarily recycled precious metals. Because our recycled metals are refined back into their pure elements, they are of the same high quality as newly mined metals. Dirty gold mining has a history of civil war, labor abuses, and environmental devastation. Our objective is to diminish the negative impacts of dirty gold by reducing the demand for newly mined metals.

Our responsibly sourced wood ring boxes are designed to be as iconic as the jewelry they hold. Our non-toxic, biodegradable jewelry cleaner is complimentary for ring orders over $1,000 with gemstones. Our silver jewelry arrives in a fabric pouch inside a paper gift box. Our shipping packaging also comes from responsibly managed sources. As part of our continued commitment to reducing our environmental footprint, we redesigned our packaging in 2018. We estimate that our new packaging will result in a 35% decrease in paper packaging used in the first 12 months.

We are passionate about cultivating a more transparent, sustainable, and compassionate jewelry industry. To live by our mission, we are committed to responsible sourcing, giving back and sustainable practices.  Climate change poses an immediate threat to us all, and we encourage individuals and businesses alike to take action to reduce their impact on the environment.

“Commitment to sustainability is core to our mission. We’re proud to partner with to offset our carbon emissions as we strive to reduce our impact on our environment.” Beth Gerstein, Co-Founder & Co-CEO
