Since 2007, Amtrak has partnered with Carbonfund.org Foundation to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to slowing climate change by supporting world-class carbon offset projects that reduce millions of pounds of CO2e emissions.
Amtrak has offset over 17 million pounds via Carbonfund.org Foundation. This is equivalent to preventing greenhouse gas emissions from over 19 million miles driven by the average passenger vehicle or the carbon sequestered by over 207,000 tree seedlings grown over 10 years.
“Our partnership with Amtrak means support for important and innovative projects in the fight against climate change,” said Eric Carlson, President of Carbonfund.org. “We commend Amtrak for their significant environmental commitments which include reducing greenhouse gas emissions of their operations and providing passengers the option to offset the carbon footprint of their rail travel.”
Carbon offsets purchased by Amtrak customers have contributed to a range of projects like renewable energy production and land conservation. The North Country Landfill Gas to Methane Project in New York State, produces approximately 4.8 megawatts (MWh) of clean electricity while reducing the amount of methane released into the atmosphere. The Envira Amazonia Project located in the Amazonian Basin of Brazil which preserves nearly 480,000 acres of pristine Brazilian rainforest. The project is host to rare and highly endangered ecosystems, which support over 30,000 types of plants, and wildlife, including howler monkeys, fresh water dolphins and scarlet macaws. The project also directly benefits the local community including offering agricultural extension training courses; granting land tenure to local communities; and establishing alternative economic activities including commercializing the collection of medicinal plants and açaí.
At Amtrak, sustainability is balancing the needs of their organization with the needs of future generations. They are making commendable progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions – in large part due to the commitment to reduce fuel and energy use bringing more fuel-efficient and lower emission trains into their fleet. Since 2010, they have saved more than 180,000 metric tonnes of CO2e comparable to 38,500 passenger vehicles driven for a year. In fiscal years 2016 and 2017, Amtrak achieved their goals of reducing electricity usage, reducing purchased revenue diesel fuel, and reducing GHG emissions.
Carbonfund.org wishes Amtrak continued success with their committed long-term leadership in addressing sustainability both at their company and as a global citizen that supports preserving our planet for future generations.
