Hafner Vineyard Extends Family Tradition of Sustainability with Carbonfree® Shipping

Tuesday, 28 August 2018

Hafner Vineyard is a small three generation family winery in Alexander Valley near Healdsburg in Sonoma County, California, producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec and Rosé wines from only grapes grown at the winery. The family-owned vineyard has been growing grapes and producing wine for over five decades.  Wines are only sold direct to people at home and to leading California restaurants; not in any wine shops. Three generations of Hafners work there to deliver quality wine at a great value with personal service.

The vineyard’s commitment to the environment has been long rooted in the Hafner family and Hafner Vineyard culture. The family sees themselves as stewards of the land, with the responsibility to care for it and preserve it for future generations.  The family maintains 96 acres of vineyards, but also has over 150 acres of rolling hill oak woodlands (over half their property) that they leave for the flora and fauna.

“We want to do everything we can to minimize our impact on the environment. Since we sell our wine direct to people at home, having our wine shipped all over the country is a large contributor to our carbon emissions,” explains Kate Hafner, 3rd generation Hafner family member.  “Partnering with Carbonfund.org Foundation was the right thing to do and the least we could do to reduce our footprint and protect the planet for future generations.”

By adding Carbonfree® Shipping to their sustainability initiatives, Hafner Vineyard will neutralize the environmental impact of its wine shipments each quarter by supporting Carbonfund.org’s third-party validated and verified carbon emissions reduction projects.

Hafner Vineyard aims to make and market wine with the smallest impact on the earth. All the energy used in the wine growing, harvesting and production process is 100% renewable and 100% local, including 37% coming from the vineyard’s own solar array.  Hafner Vineyard is “certified sustainable” through the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance.  Water usage is also minimized – just 8 gallons per case – much lower than industry standards.
