Numi Tea Turns 18 – Celebrating People, Planet and Pure Tea – And Six Years Reducing CO2e!
Tuesday, 3 October 2017
The following is a guest blog post by Ahmed & Reem, Co-Founders of Numi Tea, a Carbonfree® Business Partner with Carbonfund.org.
We are excited to announce the launch of our 2016 Impact Report at www.numitea.com/impactreport.
It is an honor to share the work Numi has been nurturing for nearly two decades: Celebrating People, Planet and Pure Tea.
From the beginning, sustainability and social responsibility have been at the core of our intentions and decisions. When we began Numi in 1999, making tea in a small Oakland, California apartment, we set out to source direct from farmers and produce tea in a way that is pure and ethical. We wanted to run a business that was an extension of our personal values and to follow our hearts, determined to have a positive impact on people’s lives and on this precious planet. Through our work in sustainable agriculture, socially responsible labor programs, eco-friendly packaging, clean water initiatives and more, we’re excited to share Numi’s progress and our goals for the future.
In 2016 alone:
- We broadened our Together for H2OPE initiative, bringing safe drinking water to 4,000 Turmeric farming villagers in Madagascar.
- Our Fair Trade premiums paid directly to farmers increased by 18%, totaling $839k paid to date.
- We began offsetting carbon emissions from employee travel, totaling 17.3 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent offset. [Numi Tea began offsetting emissions from business facilities and product shipments with Carbonfund.org in 2011, a total of almost 2700 metric tonnes of CO2 neutralized to date!]
We understand, now more than ever, that it is the responsibility of organizations and individuals to commit to strong positive values, and to live by them. It is imperative to connect with and care for the planet’s well-being and all of the people that we touch in an authentic way. In 2017, we will grow our impact: expanding Together for H2OPE to India, South Africa and Egypt; bringing Fair Labor to new farmers on two continents and working towards becoming carbon positive. We do this simply because we care about our communi’tea, and because it is the right thing to do. That is the Numi way.
We only hope that the work we share here inspires others to incorporate sustainability, authenticity and compassion into the work they do as well.

Thank you for all your support and love, and for being a part of the Numi communi’tea!
