Amtrak to Begin Reporting Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Carbonfund.org partner Amtrak has stepped up its environmental leadership in the rail industry by volunteering to disclose its greenhouse gas emissions, as well as conduct an independent assessment of its carbon reduction programs.

Amtrak has also been a charter member of the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) and has exceeded all required interim annual reduction targets. Their commitment to reduce emissions from diesel locomotives by 6% from 2003-2010 is the largest voluntary emission reduction commitment in the U.S.

In addition, Amtrak has taken measures to tune up energy efficiency, reduce idling time on diesel locomotives, and install lighter aerodynamic vehicle carriers on the Auto Train. Through our partnership, Amtrak enables riders to offset their train travel in support of renewable energy, forest-based, and energy efficiency projects at http://www.carbonfund.org/amtrak.

Amtrak President and CEO Joseph Boardman mentioned that the purpose of assessing Amtrak's carbon footprint & carbon reduction programs is to determine what changes might be needed to strengthen it, compare itself with industry competitors, and identify opportunities for energy efficient transportation.
