Carbonfund.org 2008 Highlights
2008 has been a banner year for the country’s leading nonprofit carbon offset provider. First, in October, we announced that we are offsetting 3 billion pounds. But that was rapidly followed by our announcement in December that we are offsetting 4 billion pounds. That kind of progress is what is required in the fight against global warming, and we’re happy to be part of the solution.
Partnerships - Our partnerships with companies large & small have helped us attain these new milestones. 2008 saw many new partnerships with household names. In May, we partnered with JetBlue. Then in July, we partnered with Avis Budget Group. In November, we partnered with Hyundai Motor America. And in December, we partnered with Virgin America.
In addition, we added many new
small business partners, bringing the total number of businesses we are
partnering with to over 1000!
Projects - Our projects are the heart of what we do. Here are some key updates:
- The Tensas National Wildlife Refuge Reforestation project has been expanded from 1,110 to 1,870 acres.
- Carbonfund.org is now supporting 81 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of renewable energy including:
- 20,000 megawatt hours (MWh) from Buffalo Gap Wind Farm
- 4,949 megawatt hours (MWh) from Iowa Lakes Community College Wind Farm
- Other purchases of offsets included 100,000 metric tons from the Development Authority of the North Country’s Solid Waste Management project; 150,000 metric tons from the Chicago Climate Exchange; 5,000 metric tons from the IdleAire, Inc. Truck Stop Electrification Project; and 21,850 metric tons from the Inland Empire Biodigester.
Product certifications - 2008 saw the Certified CarbonFree® label really take off. Companies that submitted their products to undergo life-cycle analyses and pledged to offset the footprints associated with those products include:

- Monarch Beverages
- LTS Press
- Grounds for Change
- Tandus
