Wind Energy is Taking Flight
The American Wind Energy Association’s 3rd Quarter report shows the United States is on track to add 2,750 Megawatts of wind energy in 2006. With one megawatt of energy enough to power 250-300 homes, the current wind capacity of the United States is enough to power the entire state of Rhode Island.
Florida Power and Light recently completed the world’s largest wind facility. The Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center is a 735 MW installation. The wind energy tax credit that subsidizes 1.9 cents per KWh comes to a close in December 2007, which is causing developers to scramble to complete installations. An additional extension of the credit would stabilize the industry and allow for long-term planning and increased efficiency.
Wind generation in the United States saves over a half billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. This represents a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions as well as other pollution related to power generation from fossil fuels.
Renewable Energy Credits are a significant factor in the success of wind generation. When you offset with green-e certified renewable energy, you are making an investment qualified green power projects.
