Secure World Foundation

Secure World Foundation (SWF) is an endowed, private operating foundation that promotes cooperative solutions for space sustainability.  SWF works with governments, industry, international organizations and civil society to develop and promote ideas and actions for international collaboration that achieve the secure, sustainable, and peaceful uses of outer space. 

Like conservation efforts on Earth, SWF is working globally to connect the importance of our current use and reliance on space, the issues that jeopardize that use, and the historic and ongoing activities underway to help ensure that all humanity can continue to use outer space for peaceful purposes and socioeconomic benefit now and in the long-term. 

SWF focuses our efforts on the following areas:

  • Space Sustainability:  mitigating environmental and human-generated threats to the long-term sustainability of space activities
  • Human and Environmental Security:  maximizing the international cooperative use of space systems for the benefit of humanity
  • Space Law and Policy:  supporting the development of national and international laws and policies to enhance the long-term sustainable use of space for benefits on Earth
  • Strategic Stability and Outer Space:  reducing the risk of accidents or misperceptions in space that could spark or escalate tensions
  • Planetary Defense:  promoting a unified international policy approach for the protection of our planet from near Earth objects (NEOs)

 Our methods include:

  • Informing:  SWF generates research and analysis for decision-makers to promote creation of sound policy and raise awareness of key issues that may threaten the security, sustainability and utility of outer space
  • Facilitating: SWF convenes timely public and private meetings with stakeholders on key issues to encourage discussion and constructive dialog for next steps in support of its mission
  • Promoting:  When viable solutions or next steps become apparent, SWF formulates and disseminates policy positions that are aligned with its vision and mission in order to move them from idea to implementation

Environmental Commitment

As our name suggests, we are focused on working towards a secure world. We are unique in that we consider the secure and sustainable use of space as an avenue for peaceful coexistence in space and on the Earth. Our long-term objective is to 1) establish a safe and secure environment conducive to the sustained use of outer space, 2) to prevent conflicts on Earth from entering space, and 3) to prevent space from becoming a flashpoint for violence.

We work with partners around the world, and in our capacity as a permanent observer to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), to promote, establish and maintain cooperative mechanisms to prevent an arms race in outer space and for the international community to share data on space situational awareness, space traffic management, orbital debris mitigation, tracking and deflection of near Earth asteroids and Earth observation.
