Center for International Studies
The mission of CIS is to provide innovative education programs that broaden academic perspectives, promote global awareness, and encourage personal development while laying the foundation for participants to become engaged world citizens.
Being mindful of our impact on the Earth's natural resources, CIS is committed to leading by example in integrating environmental awareness and responsibility into our daily operations and overseas programs.
In our office itself, we reuse as many materials as possible, purchase office supplies from green, local sources, offset the CO2 emissions generated from the flights our students take to study abroad, and educate our students about the environment of their host country and give them volunteer options so they can help make it a “greener” place.
“CIS attempts to be environmentally mindful in everything we do, from choosing the paper to use in our offices across the country to collecting and analyzing the flight mileage of hundreds of students we work with. We know that international travel generates an enormous amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, but since air travel is the only way our students can get to their study abroad locations, we partner with Carbonfund.org to offset the carbon emissions created by these flights. The CO2 generated is thus neutralized by positive action taken to reduce emissions, such as tree-planting and alternative energy use. Not only is Carbonfund.org a fabulous organization with an important mission, but they have been a wonderful partner to work with on our various “greening” projects over the years and we are grateful to have them by our side!” - Amanda Bernhard, Senior Program Coordinator
