It’s still early in this new year, and with Earth Day approaching next month, it’s a great time to look for ways to improve, expand and enrich your commitments to protecting and preserving our environment.

During 2013, Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery of St. Helena, CA augmented their organic agricultural practices and environmental sustainability initiatives by offsetting business flight emissions through Carbonfud.org.  This year, Spottswoode took the additional step to allocate a larger portion of its 1% for the Planet pledge to join the Carbonfree® Business Partnership program, thus neutralizing all of their annual operational emissions by supporting Carbonfund.org’s carbon reduction and clean air projects around the world.

“Climate Change is the defining issue of our time, and we feel strongly that we must be a part of the solution to this global crisis,” explains Beth Novak Milliken, President and CEO of Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery.  “We take our commitment to the environment seriously, and through our actions, we hope to inspire others to care for and respect our natural resources as well.”

Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery is a family-owned vineyard and winery renowned for producing classic and refined wines that honor their vineyard origins. The balance, grace, and integrity reflected in their wines also drive a commitment to organic farming and stewardship of the winery’s gardens, historic building, and local watershed.

Spottswoode Estate Vineyard and Winery has farmed organically since 1985 and became a California Certified Organic Farmer in 1992.  In addition, Spottswoode is certified Napa Green by the Napa Valley Vintners, uses solar power in their vineyard and winery, maintains insectaries and bird boxes in the vineyard, runs tractors on biodiesel and works to conserve water.  The winery spearheaded the restoration of Spring Creek, which defines the southern boundary of their vineyard and is shared with many residential neighbors.  The expansion of the winery’s environmental responsibility to mitigate all operational carbon emissions through the Carbonfree® Business Partnership demonstrates an ongoing dedication to the health of land and air upon which Spottswoode Estate Vineyard and Winery depends.

Even in the world of high fashion, social responsibility and environmental commitments make a difference.  Witness the example of Master & Muse, a fashion-forward lifestyle brand created by fashion icon and actress Amber Valletta to bridge the gap between high fashion and mindful manufacturing.  The mission at Master & Muse by Amber Valletta is to offer customers socially responsible fashion that is stylish, exciting, desirable and accessible.  To help achieve this mission, Master & Muse turned to Carbonfund.org to neutralize annual operating emissions by supporting clean air and carbon reduction projects.

“I have always believed that substance and style do not have to be mutually exclusive,” states Amber Valletta. “The partnership between Master & Muse and carbonfund.org illustrates that we can have both at the same time.”

Today, Master & Muse by Amber Valletta exists as an online store on Yooxygen.com, which offers a selection of curated stylish clothes and accessories that are designed, sourced and produced responsibly.  The criteria used to vet the brands that are sold on www.masterandmuse.com ascribe to the core values of Awareness, Innovation, Collaboration, Integrity and Creativity.

The themes of environmental and social sustainability run through all of these core values.  Each brand in the shop is taking steps to improve how fashion is designed, sourced and produced.   Ultimately, Master & Muse by Amber Valletta promotes that “It’s Fashion Forward to Buy Better.” Buying better means buying more consciously, which in turn is better for our planet.

Outdoor sports and activity enthusiasts have regular opportunities to be immersed in our natural environment.  Many visit the same locations year after year, often able to observe the negative effects of climate change, habitat destruction, and encroaching urban sprawl.  Many companies that provide products and services to the outdoorsy types are aware of the impact of their operational emissions on the environment and have taken steps to address the issue.

A great example of leadership in carbon emissions neutralization is Seattle-based evo, bringing high quality ski, snowboard, wakeboard and skateboard gear and apparel to their customers.  For the past six years, evo has offered its customers a simple, affordable way to neutralize the carbon emissions created by shipping their products to customers through the CarbonFree® Shipping program.

"Carbonfund.org was clearly the best partner for our business for several reasons,” explains Bryce Phillips, Founder and Owner of evo.  “Firstly, they are the only non-profit organization among the larger companies offering carbon offsetting. Secondly, due in part to their non-profit status they can offer the same product (carbon offsetting) at the best price. Lastly, Carbonfund.org has been amazing to work with in implementing our website checkout. They were extremely helpful with messaging and promotion as well as logistics and aiding in the calculation of offset amounts."

evo seeks to involve  its customers in the company’s environmental commitment and to raise awareness about how easy and effective carbon offsetting can be.  evo customers help spread the word about the options people have to green up their lives by supporting Carbonfund.org’s clean air and carbon reduction projects, and help pave the way for other companies to offer carbon offsetting.  That’s industry leadership – making a commitment, leading by example, and encouraging customers and supporters to join in the effort to transition to a cleaner energy future.

The environmental movement today requires individual and collective efforts that reach beyond one’s personal impact on the earth to make a difference.  The CarbonFree® Business Partnership program gives companies of all sizes a simple and affordable way to neutralize their annual operational emissions, but our programs also create opportunities to go beyond direct impact.

One of our CarbonFree® Partners, Envision Technology Marketing Group (ETMG), a totally virtual marketing firm and a certified green business, is celebrating its sixth year CarbonFree® while maintaining an innovative additional emissions offsetting program that recognizes each new purchase order opened by their clients each quarter.

For the past six years, ETMG has donated 500 pounds of carbon credits through Carbonfund.org for every new purchase order.  To date, and including ETMG’s own aggregate CarbonFree® Partner offsets, ETMG has neutralized over 1.85 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions by supporting clean energy technology and clean air projects around the world.  That equates to taking 175 cars off the road for a year or equals the amount of carbon dioxide sequestered annually by 688 acres of US forestland.

ETMG chose to partner with Carbonfund.org after careful research, based on the high impact green causes Carbonfund.org supports, and the success the foundation has had creating momentum around environmental issues.

“Taking care of our environment has become part of our central mission to provide a unique and affordable service offering to our clients,” explains Michael Grodin, co-founder of ETMG.  “Our ability to leverage cutting-edge technology for all our communications and operational needs is a tribute to our clients, and the incredible products they develop, and showcases the possibilities of a new era of conservation.”

This spring, ETMG produced a clever Infographic that explores the impact of their sustainability efforts.  Carbonfund.org is very happy to partner with an innovative firm such as ETMG, leading its industry in helping transition to a cleaner energy future and healthier environment.

Many of our business partners focus on following sustainable business practices, specializing in organic products, minimizing waste in their packaging and supporting Fair Trade practices. These programs are important to their business ethics and compatible with the products they’re delivering.

Exemplifying this approach is the husband-and-wife team that created Arbor Teas, a CarbonFree® Business Partner for six consecutive years.

Arbor Teas offers USDA-certified organic loose leaf teas from around the globe through its on-line store, with one of the web’s largest selections of organic tea, three-quarters of which is Fair Trade Certified.  Arbor Teas maintains a daily mission to find the world's most fantastic organic teas and deliver them to customers as sustainably as possibly.  This includes maintaining their CarbonFree® Business Partnership, neutralizing all operational and shipping emissions by supporting Carbonfund.org’s clean air and carbon reduction projects around the world.

Because Arbor Teas deals in products that come from all corners of the globe, it was imperative to offset the carbon footprint of all shipments that arrive at or depart from their facility as well as the carbon emissions from their internal operations.

“It makes no sense at all to sell an organic product if the method of delivering it to our customers is environmentally harmful,” emphasizes Jeremy Lopatin, co-founder of Arbor Teas with wife Aubrey.  “Although we do everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint, we’re happy to partner with Carbonfund.org to offset what we can’t avoid… yet!”

Arbor Teas became the first tea company to deliver its full line of organic loose teas in 100% backyard compostable packaging, continuing to lead the tea industry through its staunch commitment to sustainable business practices.  Tea drinkers are now able to compost their tea leaves and tea packaging together in their home composting system.  Organic teas delivered CarbonFree® with compostable packaging – that’s commitment to environmental sustainability in action and leadership by example.

One of the primary components of Carbonfund.org’s mission is to provide climate change education and public outreach through our programs, and through our business partners and supporters.  Two of Carbonfund.org’s business partners recently teamed up in a great example of public outreach, hosting a zero-waste event in their community.

The City of Pleasanton, CA and Hacienda Business Park Owners Association hosted the 3rd annual Pleasanton Green Scene Fair on September 20th at Hacienda West.   The event featured over 100 exhibitors providing information, demonstrations, raffles and samples of products related to health and nutrition, energy efficiency, commuting alternatives, water conservation, recycling, and locally-sourced foods.  The event also included a special display of alternative fuel vehicles, a mini-farmers market and the “Off The Grid” gourmet food trucks selling natural and sustainable treats.

Hacienda Business Park Owners Association has been a CarbonFree® Business Partner since 2007, calculating and neutralizing annual operational emissions by supporting Carbonfund.org’s carbon reduction and clean energy technology projects.  And Hacienda’s Owners Association helps to spread the word about Carbonfund.org’s mission and projects, including the Million Tree Challenge, to the many businesses that occupy Hacienda’s properties.  They also recommended that the City of Pleasanton contact Carbonfund.org to evaluate the fair’s carbon emissions and create a program to mitigate emissions associated with the day’s events by supporting Carbonfund.org’s clean air projects.

The road to succeeding in the fight against climate change and to hasten our transition to a cleaner energy future is to act boldly and work together to engage businesses, communities and networks to join in local and global efforts.  The Pleasanton Green Scene Fair is a great example of partnership among a local business leader in sustainable operations, their environmentally-aware municipality and Carbonfund.org to promote environmental conservation and sustainable business practices in their community.

Part of an effectively designed corporate social responsibility program is to address the interests and concerns of the clients, customers and employees of the company.  The fitness industry has recognized that its customers and employees seek out businesses that share their commitment to social responsibility and environmental sustainability, but not all have addressed these concerns.

Carbonfund.org partner HealthCare International (HCI), a leading supplier and distributor of innovative products for health, wellness, fitness and active aging, took action by implementing a program to assess and neutralize the environmental impact of its annual operations.  Since 2008, HCI has measured and offset all carbon emissions associated with the energy used in its manufacturing, packaging, transportation and operational aspects of their business through their CarbonFree® Partnership program. This commitment places HCI as an environmental leader in the fitness industry and demonstrates proactive steps in the fight against global climate change.

In order to neutralize its annual operational emissions, HCI has made itself carbon neutral by supporting Carbonfund.org’s carbon reduction projects which are helping to build renewable energy sources, develop reforestation projects and invest in energy efficiency technology worldwide. Considering the implications of climate change, maintaining a carbon emissions mitigation program through Carbonfund.org is a natural extension of the work HCI does in improving the health and wellness of its customers and employees.

Glenn Safadago president of HealthCare International comments, “Collectively, the fitness industry has not made an effort to reduce its impact on the environment. Our goal is to be the first company in the fitness industry to be considered a “green” manufacturer.”  We commend HCI for their leadership position in fitness industry sustainability and are proud to partner with them in these ongoing efforts.
