The Tower Companies Announce Carbon Neutral Operations Renewal through New Sustainability E-NewsletterWritten by Linda
The Tower Companies “envisions a world where buildings inspire and enrich the lives of their occupants, and create a positive social change.” In this envisioned world, people seek out buildings that improve their health and well-being, connect them to thriving communities and help to sustain the environment.
The Tower Companies strive to be leaders in the green building industry – they believe it's not only a responsibility, but also an opportunity. One of the company’s goals is to "lead by example on environmental responsibility, by developing and managing high performance properties, being a global voice on environmental stewardship, and sharing our sustainable and innovative practices."
Since 2008, the Tower Companies has been a carbon neutral company, offsetting 100% of energy consumption by purchasing wind power and carbon credits, equal to over 150,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Carbonfund.org has been fortunate to partner with the Tower Companies to help achieve some of their carbon neutral goals. Through energy reduction strategies, the Tower Companies also have saved 10 million kWh in electricity, a 22% reduction since 2008.
Please see their inaugural sustainability e-newsletter for more interesting and inspirational facts about the Tower Companies’ environmental impact achievements.

For many businesses, a commitment to environmentally-responsible operations is an easy decision and a natural extension of their overall mission. This continues to be the case for Carbonfree® Business Partner Tenfold Fair Trade Collection, which seeks to achieve its goals in part through our simple and affordable annual carbon emissions mitigation program.
Tenfold Fair Trade Collection offers a unique collection of creative, fairly traded, eco-friendly products from all over the world, through its retail store located at 181A Potomac Street in Harper’s Ferry, WV, or via its online site, and is dedicated to the principles of the fair trade system of exchange that guarantee prompt and fair wages to artisans for their work. Joining the Carbonfree® Business Partnership program two years ago, after making various operational emissions offset donations to Carbonfund.org since 2010, was the easiest and most affordable way for Tenfold Fair Trade to improve the sustainability of its operations.
"It is extremely important to us to do our part to protect our environment. Unfortunately we are not located in an area that allows retail electricity competition, so we are presently unable to purchase green power,” explains Martha Ehlman, President of Tenfold Fair Trade Collection. “Partnering with Carbonfund.org allows us to fulfill our commitment to support the continued growth and use of renewable energy sources. We are delighted to partner with a fellow Green America member. We are as committed to the care of our planet as we are to the care of our global neighbors."
Tenfold Fair Trade Collection is committed to issues of social justice and environmental responsibility. The artisans they promote reduce, reuse, reclaim, and recycle materials wherever possible, as does the Tenfold Fair Trade Collection in its own operations. As a Green America Certified organization and a regular contributor to the Keeper of the Mountains Foundation, Tenfold Fair Trade continues to work to elect officials that share a commitment to the protection of our environment and the growth of renewable energy.
And their environmental activism does not stop there. On July 29th of this year, Martha Ehlman of Tenfold Fair Trade Collection joined almost three dozen WV Eastern Panhandle Sierra Club members on a journey to Washington, D.C. Eleven of their group, including Martha, elected to testify at the EPA hearing regarding the Clean Power Plan, and another dozen spoke to an aid from WV’s Senator Manchin's office for at least a half an hour, pressing for a commitment to the Clean Power Plan.
Tenfold Fair Trade Collection seeks to offer current generations of artisans and consumers the ability to meet their needs without compromising the sustainability of future generations, by actively considering the implications of their decisions on the environment and promoting responsible stewardship of resources. The Carbonfree® Business Partnership program is one way the organization meets its goal to “reduce what it can, offset what it can’t™.”

In 2012, Canadian-based tea and coffee wares distributor Grosche International officially became carbon-neutral through the Carbonfree® Business Partnership program. Grosche made the decision to partner with Carbonfund.org to offset all estimated annual emissions incidental to their business by supporting Carbonfund.org’s reforestation projects.
Grosche International is a family-run business with a passion for fine design in tea and coffee wares and accessories. Grosche strives to offer a premier line of products and distributes them to retailers across the USA and Canada. All products are BPA and phthalate free, hand blown and assembled with a personal touch, and double checked to ensure that it meets all expectations. Their goal is to ensure that customers enjoy their tea and coffee experience by offering great products that help to enable a healthy lifestyle.
“A day will come when our generations will look to us either with pride, on how we saw the importance of sustainability and took measures towards it, or with disdain at how we knew the risks but did nothing about it,” states Mehreen Sait, President of Grosche International. “How they look upon us tomorrow depends on the choices we make today. Let’s make the right choices; ones that we, and our coming generations, can live with.”
In addition to the Carbonfree® commitment, Grosche has adopted high-efficiency lighting in their office and warehouse, using over 50% recycled paper and fully re-used and recycled shipping materials, optimizing ocean freight paths, and other steps to conserve the environment we share.
Want more proof that businesses of any size can make a difference in our environment, our communities and our overall well-being? Consider Rubber Soul Yoga Studio in Athens, Georgia, as they renew their commitment to maintaining a Carbonfree® studio for the fifth consecutive year.
In addition to soothing and healing mind and body, Rubber Soul works to raise awareness about the urgency of climate change by showing documentaries, discussing lifestyle choices, and encouraging personal and political transformation at their studios.
"Rubber Soul encourages non-violence in every aspect of one's life. We can reduce our impact and offset the rest,” asserts Cal Clements, Director of Rubber Soul & Adventure Club. “Carbonfund.org has offset projects in India, the birthplace of yoga.”
To augment their Carbonfree® studio, the folks at Rubber Soul have replaced the paper towels in the bathroom with red automotive towels, which Cal washes each week. They quietly encourage a vegan/vegetarian diet, since industrial food processes are a big contributor to greenhouse gases. Rubber Soul is also a donation studio, where class participants pay what they can. Cal believes that making less money and therefore spending less money creates a lighter load on the planet. These actions and beliefs, coupled with the Carbonfree® commitment, help Rubber Soul achieve the differences they seek to make in the lives of their class participants and their greater community.
The Envira Amazonia Project involves numerous local and international partners that will collectively protect nearly 500,000 acres in the Amazon Rainforest – the world’s largest rainforest - from conversion to large-scale cattle ranches and prevent millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
Avoided deforestation projects are critical because about 15 percent of global warming is attributed to deforestation, which reduces the Earth's capacity to absorb carbon dioxide. Moreover, fallen trees decompose and release methane, a heat-trapping gas about 23 times more potent than CO2.
The Envira Amazonia Project is now being reviewed for validation to the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS) with Gold Distinction for exceptional biodiversity and community benefits, along with Gold Distinction for climate change adaptation measures.

The Envira Amazonia Project is a Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) project that shall mitigate deforestation, preserve extraordinary biodiversity, and provide alternative economic opportunities to local communities.
Social projects and activities to mitigate deforestation pressures and benefit the local communities include, but are not limited to: agricultural extension training courses; boat patrols of potential deforestation sites; improving local schools and health clinics; and developing local infrastructure to collect, transport and sell locally-sourced açaí, medicinal plants and rubber.
The Envira Amazonia Project will also provide a variety of essential ecosystem services such as: erosion and flood control; water cycling, filtration and storage; oxygen production and nutrient recycling; and habitat for thousands of native Amazonian plant and animal species including several vulnerable tree species and numerous endemic bird species.
Thank you for your ongoing support!

Kehillat Israel Reconstructionist Congregation of Pacific Palisades Continues Carbonfree® OperationsWritten by Greg Husebye of Temple Kehillat Israel of Pacific Palisades
Kehillat Israel Reconstructionist Congregation of Pacific Palisades is proud of our commitment to the Carbonfund.org Foundation since 2008. We feel it is through individual and group commitment and action that we can improve the environment for future generations. Our partnership reflects the shared concerns of climate change and taking action by reducing what we can and offsetting what we can’t.
Reconstructionists define Judaism as more than a religion. We see God as the power that infuses all creation with transcendence and inspires us to improve the world and ourselves. We believe in the equality of men and women and that Judaism is an evolving religious civilization reflecting peoplehood, community, history, the arts and ethics.
Our 7-year participation in the annual emissions neutralization program represents a pledge on our part to reducing global warming, as well as water and energy use.
Our congregation is dedicated to a healthier environment, sustainable business practices and a reduction in the carbon footprint of our facilities. We accomplish this by:
- reducing fresh water use through managed irrigation, planting and the installation of low-usage fixtures and waterless urinals
- Achieving energy saving through the use of efficient fixtures, timers and managed thermostat temperature settings
- Recycling of our trash and all disposable materials
- Responsible management of E-Waste
As a self-funding non-profit organization, we have committed ourselves to including thought for the environment in all aspects of our facility operation, budgeting and management.
Linda Kelly, Business Partnerships Manager at Carbonfund.org, adds, “We value our partnership with Kehillat Israel Reconstructionist Congregation of Pacific Palisades and applaud their leadership in maintaining a long-term and comprehensive program to reduce the congregation’s environmental impact and mitigate the carbon emissions from their annual operations. Since 2008, the program has neutralized over 3 million pounds of greenhouse gases, comparable to the emissions created by driving an average passenger car almost 3.5 million miles. Our partnership demonstrates a real commitment to ‘reduce what you can, offset what you can’t™’.”

Voxmicro, a leading technology group with prime focus in radio-frequency components, platforms and other network solutions has adopted the AIRETOS™ brand for its OEM and RF modular designs and wireless platforms.
With the introduction of its new brand, VoxMicro is also reemphasizing its pledge to the environmental cause. VoxMicro made a commitment to “zero out” the carbon footprint of its logistics and IT operations, and to provide carbon neutral shipping. Since 2008, VoxMicro has achieved these goals through its Carbonfree® Business Partnership program with Carbonfund.org. By supporting energy efficiency projects that produce measurable carbon emission reductions, VoxMicro neutralizes its own operational emissions.
VoxMicro’s environmental initiatives extend beyond carbon neutral operations to use of eco-friendly packaging and shipping materials, minimized corporate travel, and active participation in recycling programs, material control and hazardous substances regulation compliance.
AIRETOS™ is a celebration of those efforts aiming to represent ethical and environmental ways for designing, manufacturing and operating exciting new technologies in the domain of RF Connectivity and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Moving forward, VoxMicro will maintain its commitment to reduce the environmental impact of its products and will be staying at the forefront of active green rebellion for sustainability and preservation. VoxMicro believes it is important to protect our environment and will continue to search for new avenues that protect the environment without sacrificing product and service performance.
