Since its inception in 1987, Mountain Rose Herbs has maintained a commitment to provide high quality and organic health products to its customers, with a focus on “people, plants and planet.”
Part of this commitment extends to the company’s ongoing broad and successful sustainability program, which includes reductions in energy consumption and support of renewable energy sources, and a program to neutralize any remaining carbon emissions it cannot eliminate.
Over the past ten years, Mountain Rose Herbs has offset 2208.15 metric tons of greenhouse gases – that’s almost 5 million pounds or the equivalent of carbon dioxide sequestered by 1,810 acres of forests in one year. The company’s entire annual carbon footprint, including shipping, customer service, executive travel, distribution, etc., is offset through the Carbonfund.org.
“Mountain Rose Herbs has made it a priority to reduce our carbon footprint with our newly installed solar array and partnership with Carbonfund.org,” explains Alyssa Lawless, Director of Sustainability at Mountain Rose Herbs.
In 2015, Mountain Rose Herb installed over 100 photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity for the main facility in Eugene, Oregon. The 25 kWh solar array installed on the roof will produce an estimated 32,604 kWh of power in the first year, saving money and investing in renewable energy. Over the expected 35 year lifespan of the system, it is anticipated to offset 470 tons of CO2, which is equivalent to the conservation of 10,980 trees or 48,170 gallons of gasoline. And for MRH employees, the company installed a two dock electric vehicle charging station, continuing to innovate and reduce its overall carbon footprint.
Energy conservation is paramount at Mountain Rose Herbs. Their facility was constructed to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards and uses Energy Star appliances. Mountain Rose Herbs is proud to have converted to 100% renewable energy by transferring its conventional electrical power usage to renewable energy sources, credits, and development.
The average American is responsible for 10 tons of CO2 emissions annually through their direct energy use at home, driving and flying. However, the average American is responsible for about 23 tons of CO2 when you also include their purchases, activities and the other services we all share throughout the economy.
While most people and businesses can reduce energy use by improving the efficiency of their homes and offices, buying cars that get better gas mileage and making other changes, reducing it to zero through individual actions is nearly impossible. Carbon offsets are a cost effective way to reduce the remainder of one’s climate footprint, and companies like Mountain Rose Herbs continue to lead the way in operational sustainability.
How does a progressive building design firm demonstrate its commitment to sustainable architecture beyond its client projects? One way is to incorporate a commitment to environmentally responsible operations into the company’s core mission, as The Tower Companies has achieved.
The Tower Companies strives to develop eco-progressive real estate and sustainable building projects that surpass traditional approaches to the built environment, teach people how to engage with their surroundings, promote the balance of body and mind, optimize human achievement, and respect our planet.
As a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR® Partner and Green Power Partner, The Tower Companies consistently works to reduce its impact on the global environment by completing a corporate-wide inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The company sets long-term reduction goals and annually reports progress to the EPA, The Climate Registry and to stakeholders through the Tower Companies Sustainability Report.
In 2008, The Tower Companies met their stated goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, officially becoming “carbon neutral.” The Tower Companies has continued to maintain this status, working with The Climate Registry, to improve the energy efficiency of its buildings by further reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as electricity and water usage. In 2013, Carbonfund.org assisted The Tower Companies in neutralizing its annual Scope 1 and 3 emissions that could not be reduced any further. The Tower Companies chose to support a renewable energy landfill gas project that measurably reduces its operational emissions by capturing methane gas produced by the landfill and using it to produce electricity. For its ongoing commitment to sustainability, The Tower Companies have been recognized with National Leadership Awards by both the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy.
Green building starts with efficient use of resources. It moves to how the site selection, construction and ultimate operation affect the environment - today and for generations to come. The Tower Companies’ own commitment to measuring, reducing and neutralizing is operational emissions demonstrates this commitment to green building strategies, and Carbonfund.org is proud to assist in these efforts.
