Geiman’s Heritage of Repurposing Helps Create His ArtWritten by Linda Kelly
Dolan Geiman is a nationally recognized mixed media artist creating original paintings, collages, constructions, and limited-edition reproductions. Produced from salvaged wood, found objects, and other recycled materials, Geiman's eco-friendly artwork emerges from a folk art tradition infused with a contemporary, urban style. Originally from Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, Geiman currently lives and works in Chicago along with wife and business partner Ali Marie Geiman. His artwork has broad appeal to collectors and decorators alike, successfully weaving together rural with urban, vintage with contemporary. Motifs such as birds, woodland creatures, music, and Americana are popular and recurring themes, creating an artwork that introduces a modern aesthetic while remaining true to its rustic roots. At the core of Geiman's art portfolio is the desire to transform the artist profession into a multifaceted art and home accessories company. Dolan Geiman Inc. specializes in high-quality reproductions, affordable art gifts, and eco-friendly decor. In addition to managing an Etsy shop for online purchases and participating in nationwide juried art fairs, Dolan Geiman Inc. works with international retailers to wholesale artwork, license images, co-design new products, and create custom window displays. The company also works extensively with interior designers, art consultants, and members of the hospitality industry to create site-specific art commissions and guestroom reproductions. Working together as husband and wife, artist and business manager, Dolan and Ali Marie are living proof that art and business can live together under one creative roof. "Being green is something my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents were doing long before it was trendy. Cutting up old clothes for rags and floor rugs, pulling hardware from rotting doors and floorboards, and making toys from tin and string, I was taught at an early age that everything around me could have multiple purposes. These tenets provided a solid foundation on which to build a career as a found object and mixed media artist, satisfying a deep-rooted appreciation for turning the discarded and ordinary into the extraordinary," explains Dolan. Incorporating eco-friendly practices into the business has been a natural process since its inception. For Dolan, the idea of taking things and repurposing them was an ideological current passed down from generation to generation for a family living in a rural community. Years later, having moved to Chicago with a few bucks and a car-load of artwork and supplies, the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' mantra was a similar economic reality for an emerging artist and burgeoning arts company. In an effort to offset the carbon footprint created by traveling to art fairs, Dolan Geiman joined the CarbonFree Partner with Carbonfund.org, to support renewable energy and reforestation projects. Catch Dolan at the Bayou City Art Festival Downtown in Houston, Texas this weekend, booth #301.
